With the support of MTN, GIDA is proudly announcing the launch of a Nigeria-wide photography competition to discover, support and commission emerging creative talent. The winner will be given the opportunity to create a compelling new body of work, focused on amplifying one of the inspiring stories from MTN’s social initiatives.

What Selected Artists Will Receive:

• A ₦1.5 Million commission to document an MTN x GIDA special project

• Your work shared to over 7 million across MTN's digital channel

• Mentorship from the GIDA team to produce commissioned works

SUBMIT YOUR WORK

Opens 24th November - Ends 30th December

Photographers based in Nigeria, and over the age 16, are invited to submit:
• 5-8 images of their work which best reflects your unique photographic style and showcasing a chosen community
• A short biography telling us about yourself.
• A 200 word artist statement articulating your practice and demonstrating your interest in social, political, economic or environmental issues

WINNER ANNOUNCED

15TH JANUARY 2024

The winner will be selected by a panel of judges and announced on 15th January, 2024.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS

The winner will participate in three collaborative, creative development sessions where GIDA Journal Editor-in-Chief’s, Mira Makadia and Momo Hassan-Odukale will support them deliver the new body of work.

CREATING A NEW BODY OF WORK

In January 2024, the winner will create and deliver the new body of work. The new work will be shared on GIDA and MTN Nigeria’s digital channels, reaching over 7 million people.

This competition is open to photographers aged 16 and over. 

Yes – there is no fee to enter this competition. Simply follow the guidelines here on our website to submit your work. 



We are accepting entries until the 30th of December, 2023 (5:00pm WAT).

Yes – this competition is open only to photographers who have been based in Nigeria for over 1 year. You do not have to be of Nigeria descent. We hope to extend this opportunity to other African countries in the near future. 

The images you choose to submit are up to you and should reflect your personal style and should be on the theme of “community” – be it your local communities, chosen communities, families or more. Your work can be shot using any camera model (film, digital, phone), but we do not accept any computer generated work. 




We will only accept submissions that are uploaded using our entry system. This allows us to ensure each entry is logged in with your details and available for us to view. You can submit via the form below. We will not accept any submissions by email, WeTransfer, post, etc.








All images must be submitted as JPEG files – any files in other formats (TIFF, PDF, PSD) will be discarded. Each image can be a maximum of 22MB in size. You may submit a title (200 characters max.) and caption (300 characters max.) for each image, along with your short biography and 200 word artist statement. All text must be written in English. 

No – once the images are submitted you cannot make changes or re-submit. Please ensure you are happy with your selection before submitting and ticking the box confirming you cannot make changes. 

  • A ₦1.5 million fee to create a new body of work that will amplify one of MTN’s social initiatives. 
  • The opportunity to create work with a major, global company – MTN
  • Mentorship and support from GIDA in developing and executing your idea
  • Your work featured on GIDA and MTN’s digital channels, reaching over 7 million people.
  • This competition is open to professional and non-professional photographers who have been based in Nigeria for over a year. 
  • You are permitted one individual application to enter the competition and may not enter work under any other name. 
  • Each entrant must conform that works submitted are their own, that they own the entire copyright to use, exhibit and distribute them. All submitted information, text and images are your sole responsibility, not GIDA or MTN’s, and do not breach any third-party copyright. You are entirely responsible for all content that you submit or make otherwise available. 
  • No copyright is transferred to MTN or GIDA in respect of any works entered or accepted. 
  • You understand the images, names, captions, and texts you submit to the competition site will be received by the Judges Panel. 
  • You understand that GIDA and MTN cannot offer feedback on any individual application.
  • You do not hold MTN or GIDA, including its staff and trustees, responsible for any losses, claims, liabilities, expenses, damages and costs, including reasonable legal fees, resulting from any violation of these Terms and Conditions or any activity related to the service (including negligent and wrongful conduct) by you or another person.
  • If selected, you allow your images to be used online (including social media and other platforms) and in print for marketing, press, promotional and educational purposes related to GIDA and MTN. Any images used will be fully and accurately credited when sent to press or third parties. Copyright for all images and text will remain with the artist. 
  • For physical displays, you accept that GIDA and MTN may have to crop or edit your work. You will be fully involved in discussion about any edits.
  • If you are a finalist in the competition, your name, text, and selected works will be uploaded on the GIDA website as well as both GIDA and MTN social media channels that are accessible to the public.
